The Business Card is more than contact info.
It’s a mirror. A tool to gain clarity.
Here’s how it helped me.
A Personal Back Story
Designing my first card was a turning point.
When people asked me what I do, I used to say “I’m a graphic designer.”
A super unspecific, all-saying, empty definition of my work.
And my portfolio website was just saying that—a showcase of random projects from some logos, magazines, websites, and fashion graphics… things I’ve created during university.
Here’s what it communicated:
”Hey, I can do a bit of web design, logos, drawings, advertising, editorial…”
—a lot of content but zero clarity.
Not for me and surely not for any potential client.
I was Just Scared
When it was about time to start my freelance business after graduation, I stared at the empty field below my name while designing my first business card.
What should I put here?
Graphic Designer? Fashion Artwork Designer? Multidisciplinary Designer?
My list of overcomplicated, meaningless titles was long.
Looking back, they were all coming from a place of fear and insecurities.
Because focusing means subtraction.
Subtraction of projects I worked hard on, projects I received great rates from my professors, or projects I even got paid for.
Some were bad, some were fine—but most of them were missing the most important design element:
Passion.
The Turning Point
So in a moment of desperation, I honestly asked myself:
“What do I really want to do?”
One title. One direction.
The answer was suddenly crystal clear:
Sergio Ingravalle — Illustrator.
From that point, it was easy to cut off all the projects from my website that didn’t align with my dream title and to focus on building my illustration portfolio.
Months later, my dream title became reality.
If it worked for me, it might work for you, too—just give it a try.
How it Works
Scribble your future business card on paper.
Add your name, contact details, address.Claim the title you secretly want
What title would you dare to claim if nobody was watching?Take your time
No rush—you don’t need to know it today. Instead, cut the card out and keep it with you wherever you go, and on a random day, you will see it clearly.
What You Strengthen
Identity clarity
A single title forces you to articulate the direction you truly want.Decision-making
Reduces overwhelm by removing competing options.Self-honesty
You stop playing small. You say out loud what you’ve been avoiding.Forward momentum
Once a role is chosen, next steps become obvious.
Bottom Line
This tiny card becomes a mirror for identity, direction, and ambition.
Because your mouth can say a hundred things.
But your card can say only one.
